Comments Are Closed

Help me out here.

Every now and then I read a post, find it interesting or provocative and then formulate thoughts in my head and maybe questions for clarification or further illumination, only to discover, at the very end of it, that ‘comments are closed’.

WTF?

You are posting something presumably to be read by others, so surely you have an interest in their impressions and reactions. What is the point of posting in the first place, otherwise?

Is it a protection against criticism? Is it because you consider your own posts to be sitting on some sort of pedestal way above the plebiscites (a group of admittedly very ordinary people such as myself)? I probably have this all wrong, but it just comes across as arrogance to me.

So, by all means, put me straight. Clear up my misunderstanding, because, as always, my comments remain open.

  1. Occasionally (VERY occasionally), I have closed comments on posts that generate a LOT of comments … and after awhile, they tend to become repetitious. But, as I said, this is rare.

Others close comments simply because they don’t want to let anyone else express their POV.

    1. Yeah. And the price (it’s more of a reward than a price, really) of expressing your own point of view is exposing yourself to those of others.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, my own posts attract little reaction. I am not overburdened with correspondence.

  2. I put a time-limit on my posts so no more comments can be added after that time (although I can’t recall how long it was – weeks, I’m guessing; I’ll have to go check). The problem with leaving them open is the access point for all the spam – which became ridiculous until the time limit went on.

    1. Oddly enough I get zero spam – which is probably a reflection of my wide audience.
I can understand putting a time limit on things in that case, but what I am really pointing to here are those that don’t accept comments from the very start.

  3. Sometimes people don’t have time to respond to comments or are unable to due to health reasons but still want to share content. Some people prefer to just share content without feedback.

    1. Hmmm. There is no obligation to reply, and sometimes the comments may be useful or interesting to others following the post. In these times of spreading false information I think if people say anything publicly they should accept public response.

  4. Ugh, I feel this so much! There’s nothing more frustrating than reading something thought-provoking, getting all these ideas and questions swirling in my head, and then—bam—comments are closed. Like, why even put it out there if you don’t want engagement?

I get that some people want to avoid trolls or negativity, but if you’re sharing something publicly, isn’t the whole point to spark discussion? Otherwise, it just feels like shouting into the void—or worse, like they think their words are beyond critique.

Maybe I’m missing something, but it just comes off as dismissive. If you’re going to present ideas, be ready for a conversation. And if I’ve got this all wrong, I’m happy to be corrected—my comments are always open, as you know you and I have had a few great debates that I enjoy immensely!
